Welcome to Standard!

Standard School District, established in 1909, is located in the North Bakersfield community of Oildale and serves approximately 3,000 students from transitional kindergarten through the eighth grade in four schools: Standard Elementary School, Wingland Elementary School, Highland Elementary School, and Standard Middle School.

The District's goals focus on increasing student achievement, maintaining a positive climate, and implementing a rigorous curriculum.  Standard School District strives to provide excellent communication with all students, parents, staff, and community members and uses a variety of strategies to engage and inform our community. In addition, the District seeks annual input from our educational partners on how we can continually improve and enhance the District’s educational program.  With the continued stability in the Governing Board and Administration, the District has been able to implement many new programs and continually improve.

Standard School District has been recognized by various state and national programs for the excellent programs we offer in our schools. In 2017, Standard Middle School received the  CA School Boards Association Golden Bell for The Tribe, an inclusion program that partners students with disabilities with peers for lunchtime friendship-building activities. The CA PBIS Coalition has recognized Standard schools since 2017, and in 2019 all four of our schools earned this prestigious award: Highland - Platinum; Standard  - Silver; Wingland - Silver; and Standard Middle - Gold. In 2021, Standard Middle School was awarded the State and National Forum ‘Schools to Watch’ Award for its outstanding student support programs.  By working together, we are confident that we will continue to celebrate many successes as we build a positive school culture and provide a strong academic program.

Standard School District is dedicated to educating the whole child and offers a wide array of programs and activities to enhance our students' learning and development.  We offer low class sizes and provide a quality standards-based educational program using current state-approved textbooks and digital curriculum.  The district is a leader in 21st Century educational technology in Kern County.  We provide a 2-to-1 ratio of Chromebooks to every student in 1st through 8th grades (one at school and one available for home use).  Technology is integrated into our instruction to engage students and enhance learning. Educational field trips for every student in each grade level are provided every year by the district.  All 6th-grade students are able to attend Camp KEEP at no cost to parents.  Elementary students receive instruction from an elementary music teacher and site-based P.E. teachers. The middle school students benefit from a schoolwide AVID program and outstanding fine arts program, including band, choir, theater, art, and photography.

In addition, we offer many extended learning opportunities such as Explore, a high-quality afterschool program with academically-focused enrichment opportunities, hands-on activities, and recreational programs at each of our school sites at no cost to parents. We offer an extensive school-run sports program for eligible students in grades 4-8. Furthermore, the District offers a six-week, full-day summer learning, and recreation and sports program available to all students.

Our nutrition service program provides a healthy meal to all students for breakfast, lunch, and supper that includes fresh fruit and a salad bar to every student at no cost to parents.  Student support services offered by Standard School District are provided by site-based school nurses, school psychologists, school counselors, social workers, and behavior intervention specialists. Students with special needs are provided comprehensive services from highly-trained staff. Academic intervention is provided at each school through various support programs provided by credentialed teachers, retired teacher tutors, intervention aides, and bilingual aides.  Additionally, the District employs a full-time Family And Community Engagement (FACE) facilitator to help support foster/homeless students and connect our families to community services.

We are proud to report construction was completed in August 2021 on our brand-new school, Standard Elementary, just in time for the start of the new school year. In 2019, the seven-year modernization project at Standard Middle also came to completion and added additional classrooms, a multipurpose/band room, a STEM lab, and renovated gymnasium. In 2021, the historic Standard Auditorium received a new HVAC system, and more classrooms were added to the middle school as well as a new school counseling office, school psychology office, and state-of-the-art fully-equipped fitness room. Currently, both Highland and Wingland Elementary Schools are undergoing modernization and new construction. Five new kindergarten classrooms are being added to each campus, as well as new HVAC systems, exterior paint, new roofs, and other improvements to the school grounds.

We care about our schools, our students, and our staff.  We encourage you to look around our website, or even better, stop by one of our great schools or the Education Service Center and see for yourself.  The Standard School District is a wonderful place for your child to learn for a better tomorrow!

DISTRICT HISTORY

Historical Overview

The Standard School District

The Standard School District was formed in 1909 from territory in the Beardsley and Aztec School Districts with twenty-seven students and one teacher. Standard Oil Company donated five acres of land for the new school. The original school building was located about one-half mile east of Chester Avenue on the north side of Oil Center Road, later re-named China Grade Loop. A second building was constructed in 1911 as a music room and soon became the primary building.

By 1916 the population had settled farther south in the area just north of the Beardsley Canal. This settlement, with the registered name of Oildale, boasted a post office, drugstore, a number of grocery stores, a dry goods store, a church, a livery stable, and three roadhouses.

In 1918 there was a vote of the people and five acres of land were purchased from the Pacific Oil Company. The school was literally moved down from the old site, which then reverted to the Standard Oil Company. The new location was bounded on the west by North Chester and on the south by Ferguson Avenue. The original and the second buildings were moved to the new school site.

The Standard School District

Over the years many new buildings were added to the school on North Chester. In 1935 the district began making plans for construction of a new auditorium. Under the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt, federal funds were available for a P.W.A. project for the building. The district also contributed funds for the building. The auditorium, which seats about 850, was completed in the fall of 1937. To this date, it remains an important part of life in Kern County.

Standard Elementary School on Minner Avenue was opened in the late 1940's with seven new classrooms added in 1951. In 1954 Highland Elementary School opened and Wingland Elementary School opened in 1957.

All schools in the Standard School District were upgraded and remodeled during the 1990's. The original building had to be demolished due to safety regulations and code requirements. The second building was moved to the Kern County museum.

The community has benefited from those who have worked and volunteered in the district. Because of the ideas and hard work of community members, the district has provided, and will continue to provide, educational excellence to many students.

Standard School District Today

Today, the Standard School District has a student population of approximately 3,100 and encompasses an area of approximately 34 square miles. The district has three K-5 elementary schools and one 6-8-grade middle school in the North of the River area of metropolitan Bakersfield. The schools in the Standard School District are modern, functional facilities that are equipped with computers and other multimedia, and are staffed with excellent teachers and support staff.

The mission of the district is to prepare students for the future by developing each student's positive self-concept and to prepare each student to become a thinking, contributing, responsible member of a rapidly changing society. The rich traditions of the past and the dedication of the people of the community and the people who work in the district will make this happen.
